Nok Cave Dwellings

Nok Cave Dwellings are a remarkable historical and cultural site located in the Tandjouaré Prefecture of northern Togo. These cave dwellings, built between the 17th and 19th centuries, served as fortified refuges for local communities, including the Moba, Konkomba, and Mamprussi peoples, during periods of conflict and slave raids. The caves contain over 300 structures made from clay, straw, and stones, primarily used to protect valuable crops and provide shelter. The site has been recognized for its cultural significance and was added to UNESCO’s Tentative List for World Heritage Sites in 2000.
